Thoughts from Ephesians-Thought # 64, Reflections on Eph. 6:5-9

What are some reflections that we can have from this passage in Ephesians 6:5-8? How can we apply the admonitions by Paul to slaves and masters and in our day, employers and employees to out everyday life as Christians?

First of all, this passage should change the way we work. We must remember that Paul is addressing his letter primarily to the church in the city of Ephesus, but because we are followers of Christ today we can benefit from these teachings also.

The living Christ lives in us as well as the Ephesians. Because of that, we are not alone in our lives; Christ abides in us. Whatever our position, we must live it to the glory of God.

We must work like Christ. As in all spiritual matters, Jesus leads by example. We must also work for Christ. You should do your best, as if you are doing it for Jesus.

Christian employers must (1) lead through Christ, (2) lead like Christ, and (3) lead for Christ. This passage. Should change the way we relate to people. In our culture today, there is a hierachy of value among individuals, and it tells us where we fit in that value system. That. Systems happily does not exist for the Christian. James tells us that partiality is inconsistent with the gospel of the Lord Jesus (James 2:1).

This passage is also about how we evaluate what is important.  If we have Christ we have everything that pertains to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). If we believe that, it will motivate us to be the best we can be whether slave or master in biblical times or employer or employee in today’s culture.  We will seek to uplift Jesus and strive to live our lives under His Lordship.
